Infinite Circles
The project was initiated from the idea of “endless” or “infinity.” To portray the idea I generated a surface filled with simple-repetitive actions. The basic form was a circle because the circular form does not showcase any starting point or endpoint. The greatest advantage of reproduction in the digital age is that we can easily access the concept of “infinity.” It’s interesting to notice a sense of time in the project. It comes from the tone difference, layers, light, and space that was created only through the action of making same-size circles. The resulting illusion of infinity can either blur or sharpen our finite life. The idea of repeating an action infinitely either physically or digitally succeeds when it exists as an idea and fails when it is practiced physically. So, I decided to put it into action physically. Infinitely drawn circles fill the screen very slowly.
The video focuses only on the action. In the beginning, it might look very abstract and it is all intended. The white area covers the majority of the frame, which was to push the action generating circles to a relatively small area. I wanted the viewers to really focus on the repetitive action. This is so that my actions remain only as an idea. The piece only shows the traces of my actions as if time is frozen still for a moment.
